If only they'd gone nuke a few years ago...

I believe the main reason the nuclear power station was scrapped was the discovery of the Maui gas field. With the only practical use for the gas being electricity generation there was no demand for both this power and that from a nuclear station. It was long before the anti-nuclear movement which only came to the fore in the 1980s.
